Route planning basics for mobile service businesses

Reduce travel time without making the day harder for customers or crews.

Route planning starts with accurate job data. Record addresses, service duration, time windows, access notes, assigned staff, and equipment needs. Without those basics, route optimisation only produces a neat-looking map that the crew cannot follow.

Group work by geography where possible, but leave room for realistic travel, parking, setup, breaks, and last-minute changes. Test the plan with the people driving the route. They will identify constraints that do not appear in a map, such as building access or recurring customer preferences.

Measure the result weekly. Compare planned and actual drive time, jobs completed, late arrivals, and fuel or overtime. Use the data to improve service areas, appointment windows, and pricing instead of simply asking the team to move faster.
